Notes from Sermon on Luke Chapter  24 verses 13 through 35

13. Two had left Jerusalem to go to Emmaus - maybe on way to Galilee

Perhaps in full retreat - determined to get away from the jewish leaders in Jerusalem before discussing Jesus FEAR RUNNING W/O TRUTH

14. They talked about the past few days

• The triumphant re-entry into Jerusalem and the crowds praise (hosanna)
• The passover meal
• The arrest at the Garden of Gethsemane
• The trials
• The brutality and humiliation
• The Cross
• What women had said

13. While they walked Jesus joined them but they did not recognize Him. Why?

17. He asked why they were sad…Why were they so upset?

• He knew His death was a good thing and He had taught them
• They were sad because they thought it was over….the "WAY" was finished
• He wanted to know what their need was

18. Cleopas asked Him where He had been….This was BIG NEWS.. every one in

19. Jesus asked "What things?" and the truth of their sadness comes to light. They had lost their faith when Jesus was no visable.

19. They thought that MAN had triumphed over Him

 

20. They had HOPED that He would be their EARTHLY REDEEMER

• They still did not understand why He had come
• They wanted a worldly King who would rise up and take charge physically RIGHT NOW in power
• They wanted a David or Solomon instead they had a dead leader growing cold and stiff in a tomb

19. They had even been told of His resurrection….but did not believe it
20. They had been witnessed to and TRUTH was proclaimed
21. They rejected TRUTH because they did not see Jesus there
22. Jesus Rebuked them - called them fools because of their unbelief
23. He told them that this had to happen this way
24. He preached to them - expository - explained the scriptures - TRUTH preached a sermon!
25. They Got close to Emmause - Jesus told them He had to go further…He had other places to go
26. They asked Him to stay - He Did

• They asked TRUTH to stay
• They wanted to know Him
• He came with them
• TRUTH come to them - They Invited TRUTH to Stay - TRUTH will never leave

19. He took bread - blessed it - and gave it to them

• He gave them a blessed feeding
• He gave them the Holy Spirit

19. Their eyes were opened and they knew Jesus THEY KNEW TRUTH

• The Holy Spirit is needed to remove the scales from our eyes so that we can see Jesus
• The Holy Spirit brings us Power from God
• The Holy Spirit is the Promise of God
• We can not even know there is a God with out the Holy Spirit
• After They were filled with the Holy Spirit Jesus disappeared
• His work in physical form was done
• He no longer was visable - He moved out of the physical realm and into their heart and life

19. They talked about the power of His teachings and the effect He had had on their

• Darkness and sadness had been removed
• Faith, Hope and Loved had entered into their lives
• The were EXCITED

19. They had to GO back to Jerusalem and share what Jesus had given them

• They were not afraid of the Jewish leaders anymore
• They were not afraid of the Roman governor and guards anymore
• They were not afraid of the crowds who called out "crucify Him" anymore
• They had had an experience with the LIVING GOD and they had to share it
• They recognized their experience as Gods call to join Him in what He was doing

19. HE IS RISEN
20. They told of Him and what he had given them
