Be All Than You Can Be (In 2005)

Philippians 3:12-16  "I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection! But I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ Jesus saved me for and wants me to be.  No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead,  I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven.  I hope all of you who are mature Christians will agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you.  But we must be sure to obey the truth we have learned already."   (NLT)

To be all that you can be:

  1. You must know that you already are not all that you can be.
    1. We have much to learn.
    2. There is more in God’s Word than any lifetime could completely understand.
    3. If we think we have it all figured out we are wrong!
    4. Lack of knowledge is NOT our problem – lack of obedience is.
  2. Leave yesterdays mistakes at the cross.
    1. Know that the mistakes of the past are still in the past.
    2. Not in the present or in our future
    3. We cannot undo our past mistakes, they can only be forgiven.
    4. Those are the only 2 choices:

                                                              i.      We carry them

                                                            ii.      Christ carries them

    1. What is important is not behind you
    2. What is important is now and in the future to come.
    3. The prize is ahead of you – not behind you.
  1. You must strive to fulfill your purpose.
    1. He did to give you life and purpose
    2. He is the way, the truth and the life
  2. Be in unity with Christ and His body
    1. You have to be part of His body to be in unity with Him
    2. Jesus must remain your life’s priority.  That means:

                                                              i.      Talking to Him

                                                            ii.      Reading His Word

iii.      Being solidly connected to His Body

iv.      Unity is not an attitude

                                                            v.      Unity is a relationship

1.      With Christ

2.      With His body

  1. Allow the Word of God to be your final authority.
    1. The Word over science
    2. The Word over society
    3. The Word over sinful flesh
  2.  Obey the truth you already know.
    1. “We don’t necessarily need to learn more, we already know more than we can are obeying.  If we obeyed what we know now the Kingdom of God would explode across this world.” - Pastor Bob
